How do you know if you're doing it right?

the view is huge. in every direction. This applies to anything. Business, personal, social—doesn't matter. It's the same answer.

How do you know if you're doing it right, or doing it well?

It's simpler than you might think.
You decide.

  • Decide on a indicator—what's the signifier of your success?
  • Regularly pay attention to how it's going.

That's really all it takes.

Identify what matters to you, and get specific about how you'll tell if it's going well, if you're good it, have done enough—whatever success means.

Other people have some say in this, but (even if it's about a job that someone else pays you to do) they do not have total say. It's truly up to you.

You are the one to give meaning to your life.

So, what tells you when you're doing well?

Is it how much money someone is willing to pay you, how many sales you made this week, how often he calls you, your weight, the number of times you make it to the gym, how many paintings you've sold, what the critics write about your work, what the gossips say, whether your child is smiling...

First, what is important to you? Because even if it's something that you do often, if it's really not important to you — who cares if you're particularly good at it? Move on to what is.

Life is short; attention, time and energy are limited resources.
Do you spend yourself on what is truly important to you?

And, how far are you going with it?
How far do you want to go? That's where the paying attention to how it's going comes in. It's not about taking pass/fail tests from time to time. As you go, day by day, in the small moments, give it consideration. Because your ideas about success may are likely to change over time. Certianly, your circumstances will.

So, what once meant a lot to you may not now. Though, you may still be gauging your success, the value and meaning of what you do by those same measuring sticks.

Pay attention.

It doesn't matter what you're doing or who you're with—it's your call: how do you know if you're doing it right?
